How Direct Metal Sintering Works

Service 1

The Sintering Process

A high-power fiber laser scans each powder layer, selectively melting and fusing metal particles. Layer thickness 20-60μm builds complex 3D geometry from bottom to top.

Why 99.5% Density

Modern DMLS achieves 99.5% of theoretical alloy density — eliminating macro-porosity. Hot Isostatic Pressing closes the final 0.5% for zero-porosity medical and aerospace parts.

Design Freedom Unleashed

Internal cooling channels, lattice infills, organic topology-optimized shapes — DMLS produces what CNC machining cannot, at no additional geometry complexity cost.

DMLS vs Traditional Manufacturing

DMLS eliminates tooling, enables complex geometry, and compresses lead times — at the cost of as-built surface roughness requiring CNC finishing for tight features.

  • No tooling — design changes cost nothing extra
  • Internal features: channels under 0.30" diameter
  • Lead time: 3-4 weeks vs 12-16 weeks traditional
  • Surface: Ra 6-15μm (CNC finishes to mirror)
  • Standard build: 9.6" × 9.6" × 13"
  • Large format: 31.5" × 15.7" × 19.7" available
